As Toyota Motor Europe sought to integrate AI across its operations, it encountered a common organizational hurdle: a lack of awareness and understanding about AI’s potential. While many Toyota employees were excited about AI, misconceptions about its complexity, risks, and ethical considerations created skepticism and resistance to adoption. For AI to truly take root, Toyota needed an accessible way to demystify AI, demonstrate its value, and inspire employees at all levels to explore its benefits.

Enter: An AI Democratization Program With Dataiku

The Toyota Data Analytics team developed an AI democratization program to address these challenges, using Dataiku — the Universal AI Platform — as a core tool to empower non-technical employees. The program consists of two main components:

  1. Data and AI Hackathons: With Dataiku’s collaborative platform, participants work together on real business challenges, leveraging Dataiku’s user-friendly interface and visual recipes. The platform allows easy collaboration and task-sharing, making it ideal for Toyota’s three-day events, which focus on sparking creative problem-solving.
  2. Hands-On AI Training: These sessions offer employees the chance to build their own machine learning (ML) models within a few hours. Using Dataiku’s AutoML features and GenAI Prompt Studios, participants with no prior data science experience learn how to manipulate data and see immediate results. The accessible, no-code approach enables participants to create insights relevant to their roles, transforming them into citizen data scientists.

A New Era of AI Literacy and Collaboration at Toyota

After just one hackathon or training session, employees feel more inspired and empowered to apply AI in their departments. They explore Dataiku independently, experiment with data, and bring new AI use cases to life. Executive leaders now better understand AI’s potential and limitations, enabling them to support and advocate for AI initiatives with confidence.

Since implementing the program, Toyota has seen a shift in its organizational mindset toward data and AI. The hackathons, now held annually and scheduled through 2025, have already led to three production-ready projects with significant financial potential. The hands-on AI training, of which 270+ employees from 10 different functions and factories have taken, has a waiting list booked six months in advance. Ten vice presidents have completed the training and successfully created their first ML model on their own! Participants consistently rate the training highly — 72% are inspired to continue developing their data science skills and 90% have identified practical AI applications in their areas.

Dataiku is a platform in which I can combine no-code features with scripts, like Python scripts. This completely extends the possibilities of analysis and also accelerates the speed at which I can provide analyses and deliver products to clients. The future with collaboration between Toyota and Dataiku is very bright. Wojchiech Orlowski Senior Engineer, Process Engineer, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland

Dataiku’s intuitive interface, visual recipes, AutoML and collaboration features, and no-code environment have played a pivotal role in demystifying AI for Toyota’s diverse teams, fostering a culture of data-driven innovation across Toyota’s European operations. With the help of the Dataiku Academy, Toyota teams are able to easily upskill in these domains and become citizen data scientists.

Our vision is to enable anyone in the organization with trusted and easy to use data products and analytics. So it’s a lot about governance, but also about how to make data easily accessible to the people and, now that we have Dataiku, we can very easily create a project and share it with different people in the organization. What Dataiku offers is also a full set of tutorials and training tracks which helps to democratize AI. Thierry Martin Head of Data & Analytics, IT&D – Toyota Motor Europe
